Intensives

This page is dedicated to our Intensives Disclaimers, and Travel Intensive Refund Policy. Please carefully read over both statements, as these statements are enforced during our Intensives registration and occurrence, which occur during specific times of the year.

🕑Intensive Daily Release Times

Intensive Daily Schedule will be: Monday 9:45-3:00pm and Tuesday-Friday 8:45-2:00pm

During intensives, we will be moving to a different release time for the day than we have during the regular semester. We will start each day at the same time as the rest of the semester (9:45 on Monday and 8:45 Tuesday-Friday); however, students will be released at 3:00 on Mondays and 2:00 on Tuesday through Friday. This earlier release time will give teachers their contractual planning time to do all the things they need to do.

Travel Intensive Refund Policy

For Travel Intensives planned by Steller Secondary staff, payment of all costs associated with the trip must be made 30 days in advance of the date of departure (“Due Date”). If no payment is made by the Due Date, the student will not be allowed to participate in the trip. Payment can be made with cash or check by stopping by Steller’s front office, or online via ParentConnect.

REFUND POLICY: If a Student and/or Parent/Guardian cancels the student’s participation in the trip, a refund of 50% of all costs paid towards the trip will be made, provided Steller is given notice of cancellation at least 30 days before the departure date. Notice of cancellation must be in writing, signed by the Parent/Guardian and Student, to be delivered to the front office. Should notice of cancellation be given less than 30 days from the departure date, or if a student is voluntarily or involuntarily removed from the trip within 30 days of departure, or during the trip itself, no refund will be allowed, and the Parent/Guardian/Payer and Student will forfeit all payments made towards the trip. The Anchorage School District and/or Steller Secondary does not provide students with travel insurance; however, parents/guardians may purchase their own travel insurance through a 3rd party company if desired. For Travel Intensives planned with a travel company, Steller families must abide by the travel company's cancellation and/or refund policy. Neither Steller, nor ASD, will be liable for any refunds related to trips using a travel company. If you are concerned about the cost of certain Intensive courses, or have questions, please contact Steller Secondary School at 907-742-4950.

Intensive Disclaimers

Steller Secondary School facilitates Intensive courses twice in a school year, usually occurring once in the Fall Semester and once in the Spring Semester. These Intensive courses are created and executed by Steller Secondary staff and teachers, and may require a fee. This fee, collected by teachers and staff of Steller Secondary, will first and foremost go toward purchases for the Intensives which may include but is not limited to: specific tools and supplies, travel accommodations, membership dues, food for consumption or ingredients, etc. While we do the best we can to estimate an Intensive's costs, there are occasionally funds left over. If warranted, any leftover funds will then be placed in a Discretionary Fund, which will be used by Steller Secondary staff and teachers for future Intensives needs, which may include but is not limited to the previously listed items.

During Intensives, all students engage in project-based, hands-on lived experiences through enrichment opportunities in school and the community. These enrichment opportunities include hiking, camping, theatre, cooking, state and international travel, and more. Students have the option of electing into their own independent intensive study, with school approval.

All students enrolled in a King Tech course have a few options when deciding how they’d like to engage in Intensives. Keep in mind a King Tech course takes precedence over Steller intensives as students receive 1.5 credits per King Tech course over .25 credits per Steller Intensive. King Tech students can…

  1. Do Both – If the selected Intensive course permits, students must speak with their King Tech teacher to create a plan for participating in both an Intensives course and their King Tech course. This plan must be approved by their King Tech teacher. If approved, this plan needs to be reviewed and approved by Steller.

  2. Opt-in to Independent Study – Students continue their regular King Tech course schedule during Intensives and elect the Independent Study option. Students create their Independent Study plan and review with Steller for approval.

  3. Waive – Students can receive a waiver to miss Steller's intensive class for the duration of Intensives and only continue with their King Tech class. Students who elect to waive do not receive Steller credits during Intensives. This plan must be approved by Steller.

All student daily schedules are dependent on the Intensive course selected. Please note, there are no regularly scheduled academic courses during this time. Student schedules are sent to all students once Intensives are confirmed.
